If you're into the traditional art techniques, then A, B, C, and D are useful for creating harmony. However, most modern artists use the techniques loosley or don't use them at all. Basically, it's up to you. Do you want to follow the footsteps of the "masters", like Van Gogh and Monet, or do you want to create a unique sense of harmony...one that fits you and one that others can identify you with?

Hope I've been helpful! :)

You can always break the rules but I use these as starting guidelines:

1) Define the message and emotional tone of the piece
2) Commit to a consistent rendering style
3) Define a unifying color palette which is line with the emotional tone of the piece
4) Define a visual hierarchy (what element is the 'hero' of the piece?)
5) Balance the scale, proportion, and positioning of elements in the composition, re-enforcing the visual hierarchy
6) Use a broad, yet balanced, range of tone and contrast
