Charlie is easier to say, it rolls off of the tongue a little better than Charles.

I don't think Charlie was intended to be short form for Charles but more of a friendly gesture....

A diminutive form.....

Like Peteie is longer than Peter...

One is formal. Charles was my grandfather's name. They always called him Carlie. want to her something funny? My brother's name is Larry and my mom always called him Charlie.
