For three days before I had my daughter I had what I thought were contractions, they ended up being B/H... but I SWORE they were the real thing. I timed them for 3 days and they seemed to get closer together (to about 5 min.)then stop, then repeat. I was going to BBQ's and the store, etc. and still nothing really happened. Well, when the real contractions came, I was in pain- I knew they were real because they felt very different, very urgent. There wasn't just tightening in my belly, it took over my whole body, especially my back. I wasn't able to talk, I was only able to breathe through them and think "ok- this is the real thing," People tell you "oh, you'll know when it happens"- I don't necessarily think it's b/c of that pain, rather, you will feel in your heart that it's time to have your baby.

Contractions start slow and build. The initial ones feel like a tightening of your uterus but it isn't painful. You can still walk and talk and take a shower (lol...this is when all the huge preggo ladies finally get around to shaving their legs). As labor progresses the tightening will be more intense and last longer...it starts slow...then builds up to a tight peak...then eases off again. In between contractions you feel absolutely normal. Really it is pretty bearable until you are heading into transition...that part is the hardest but it doesn't last long. Once it gets to its worst you are ready to push and if you imagine that you are pushing against the pain...it doesn't hurt near as bad. The minute the baby is in your arms you KNOW it was all so worth it and as soon as the baby is born the contractions get MUCH milder and then the placenta is passed and everything begins to ease off.

People have horror stories of labor...but don't let it scare you. Many of us get through it just fine and speak about it as a joyous occasion. Sure labor definitely is very difficult in some points...but knowing that it is opening your body up to allow the baby to be born helps. And holding that precious baby is like nothing in the world!!!

You'll feel a "tightness" in your belly. It will get really hard and then a release, over and over again. Eventually, you will begin to feel "pain" like really severe "period cramps" with each contraction and they will become closer and closer together. That's all I'm gonna tell you for now. Don't want to scare you....

They start off feeling like mild period pain and then gradually get more and more painful, untill they feel like someone is stabbing you with a knife!!! But I must say, they didn't hurt as much as I thought they would, so in a way I was pleasantly surprised in a weird sort of way. Good luck!!

if you have ever had bad , stomach cramping gastro , it is along those lines but a lot more intense toward the business end of labour. it can be very hard to talk ( or even think about talking ) as they get closer together, so make sure your birthing partner is aware of your birthing preferences beforehand so they can speak on your behalf.

Braxton Hicks contractions will feel like your being squeezed and your belly will get hard. I get them all the time. WIth the actual real contractions when you go into labor , they will feel like period cramps. Light at first and will eventually get stronger and stronger.
