If it's a perfect straight line, there will be a lunar eclipse, because the Earth's shadow will block all light from the Moon.

However, if the line is "off" by just enough that the Earth's shadow falls above or below the Moon, we'll see a full moon.

A half-moon occurs when the Moon is at 90 degrees to the line between the Earth and the Sun, and new moon occurs when the Moon is on a direct line between the Earth and the Sun. And yes, if the Moon is on a perfect line between the Earth and the Sun and not slightly north or south of the plane of the ecliptic, there will be a solar eclipse on the Earth because the Moon's shadow will block out the Sun.

You can see the Moon clearly during a lunar eclipse, it looks like a red ball. The Earth's shadow moves across the face of the full Moon but enough sunlight gets bent through the Earth's atmosphere to light the face of the Moon dimly.
