I am a cashier at a clothing retail store, and within the past few days one of the registers was short about $50 dollars. Instead of approaching all the cashiers who worked that day and asking us if we knew what happened, ect. the store manager posted ALL of our names along with the amount missing on the store bulletin board that all the employees who work there can see.

My question is, is it ethical to do that? It is quite embarassing, especially considering it could've been any number of reasons that it was short, not particulary that someone just took it. It's one thing for the manager to write it in her personal notes to keep in mind if it happened again, but quite another to post it for the ENTIRE store to see and humiliate us.

Besides contacting HR, what other steps can I take to make sure that this gets taken care of...because I don't want to be made an example of, especially since I know that I didn't do anything to warrant that type of treatment at work.

the complete amount missing from the drawer was $51.95...in my opinion I think I would notice someone taking .95 cents from the drawer.

Also, I am very worried about it, because I know I didn't do anything, and yet, I have people coming up to me & the other people who were mentioned calling us thieves.

If you don't like it then quit. There's no law against posting your name on the wall.

Exposing Liberals says that there is no law against posting your name on the wall. He is wrong. It is called slander. In your case you have been characterized as a thief without any proof. This is not ethical nor is it the right thing for management to do. Tell the management that the posting is an insult to your character and you would like them to remove your name. If they don't then you have to decide what to do next. It could be more trouble than it is worth but then maybe it's worth it on the principle. That's up to you.

I'd say that's definitely unethical, but it may be legal. Like you said, there are TONS of reasons a drawer could have been short... posting names like that is a really bad way to go about handling it. I'm not sure if there's anything else you can do besides going to HR. Let them handle it... and contact your local Dept of Labor and find out if it's even legal to do that!!!

Contact your labor board, also get a copy of your employee handbook and see if this is procedure to do this at this job, if it is NOT in the handbook, this is a choice of the employee that done this on her own-not a 'rule' of the company, and you could say your boss is making assumptions. How many cashiers run one register?

Well it was fifty bucks, not like a dollar and some change. So she is thinking someone will come forward or not do this again. If you are innocent, good for you. It's not the best managerial practice but kudos for creativity. I would be more mad at your co-workers and have a talk with them, someone stole and it is affecting you.

Unless your unionized, the only thing you could probably do is all get together and hire an attorney and file a defamation of character lawsuit against this idiot.

You can try talking to them, or their manager. Take a picture of it too before you say anything to anyone.
