Drawing prtraits and figures can be frustrating. First, you have to know all of the basics and measurements. For example when drawing a figure, you have to know that a person is 7-8 head lengths tall, and when drawing a portrait, the eyes are in the middle of the face, the nose is the same size as one eye and so on. It is impossible to tell you all of the basics of drawing poeple in one comment. You should take an art class or something. When you do understand the basics, then you need to practice at getting the person to look like the person you are trying to portray. Look at angles and use sighting to help find the right praportions. GOOD LUCK.

Look for the things that aren't there... look at spaces between things, eg. the empty space your arm makes when you put your hand on your hip. The human figure is full of proportions, if you have a photo, sometimes drawing a grid is helpful to start with so as to transfer it through drawing accurately. By looking at empty spaces and shapes you can make the drawing complete. try simple light sketches that you can work over and improve.

the most important advice I can give you in capturing a likeness of a person is to make sure you have the relationship (distance)between their eyes, nose and mouth correct. Then make sure the size and shapes of these features are correct. The rest will fall into place as you draw.

Take a college course on figure drawing, get some books on human anatomy (usually nude, skeletons etc) - they should be accurate drawings. Don't copy comic book visuals, they'll screw you up. Observing and studying the body will greatly increase your ability to draw accurate looking people.
