It's often used with hiring.... last one hired.. first one fired.
So, the long timers are more protected and the temporary helpers are usually the first to go.

It would also make sense on a crowded elevator. : )

if you show up a church late and sit in the last pew, so as to not interrupt the service. Being that you are in the last row you are closest to the door, so you are the first one out.
