He now has a bald spot on his back. Paws is a neutered 3 yr old male who eats well, is assertive but not aggressive, & plays. He has a hutch he can hop out of to roam around--he gets the 24 hr run of our large outdoor deck. He lives in temperate weather (Honolulu). The nibbling started a few days ago, but I don't know of anything new or different in our household.

It sounds like fur mite/fur mange. That is normally treated with Ivomectin.

i have heard of this while in my studies.
Give your rabbit vitamins
also does ur rabbit have white flakes where the missing fur is?
It could as simple as fleas.
Or maybe it isn't getting enough vitamins.

Your Rabbit has fleas. Take him to the vet and ask for advantix or another flea control. Trust me, it's fleas.

maybe he has mites? Take him to the vet, hes "over cleaning" himself. Im sure they make a medicated shampoo, ask your doctor.
