If it's an open position then yes, I would make a call and ask when they expect to do interviews, etc. If you left an application / resume at a company you want to work at but they had no ad for a position then no. I tell every one that leaves an application that we aren't hiring at the time but that I keep applications for 1 year. And yes it bugs the hell out of me when they keep calling.

Network. Find someone in the field/career you want to enter (or find someone who KNOWS someone in that field), and either call, email, or walk in to set up an informational interview to get advice on entering the field.

Not everyone will be open and willing to do this for you, but many ARE! People love to talk about themselves and show off what they know (hey - it's what we do on Yahoo Answers!).

Six months ago I moved up to a new area (without a job lined up), and started attending local events in music (my field). After three weeks, and introducing myself to just about everyone I could possibly think of (which is tough, since I am shy)...I am freelancing more than full-time. I've also had to turn down some full-time offers since I want to maintain the freedom I have.

Once you GET a job interview, write a thank you note (handwritten is preferred, but if your handwriting is not the best, typed is fine - but don't email, or if you email, follow up with a handwritten or typed note) and send it hours after your interview if possible. If you don't hear within a week, then call. It's pushy, but you don't want a company to think you are not interested.

It's just like sales - someone will hire you if you keep asking. If you give up, or expect that you will get a job simply by answering classifieds...you'll have a tough time getting work.

A cousin of mine called a construction company every day for a month asking if there were any job openings. They were annoyed, but impressed with his determination. He now owns 3 houses, having saved his money and worked his way up with the company. (I have a masters degree and only one house...guess he picked the right field!!)

I only do a follow up call one time after I apply. Sometimes employers will wait to see who does call just to see who really wants a job, plus it shows responsibility. I usually call in the morning. Something that I have found really helps if possible, is to turn the application in directly to the person hiring and making sure you remember their names after you introduce yourself. Then when you do call back you ask for the right person and they may remember you. Plus it looks professional on your part. On what I say? I ask them if they have had a chance to review my application and then go from there. Good luck.
