The nail polish will slide off and not stick to your nails very well.

The oils in lotion will make it chip much faster. Also before you put nail polish on you should always wipe your nails down with nail polish remover, even if you don't have any polish on because the natural oils in you nails can also interfere with the nail polish.

the lotion will make your nails slippery and the polish wont stay on as long. put lotion on if you want and then take a Q-tip and clean off the nail only and then put on polish. if you put lotion or a body oil on after the polish it will actually help the polish to dry more quickly.

the lotion won't supply a clean, smooth surface for the nail polish. if you put lotion on before, then the nail polish won't stay on as well and you'll get inconsistent results. the lotion is basically a type of barrier between the polish and your nails. for example: when they say that you should exfoliate before you wax/shave, they say that because when you do that the wax/razor will work more effectively because it'll be closer to the hair follicle.
