It undermined greatly the South's ability to act as a union on many levels because each state looked to its own defense especially close to the end of the war.

For example, the state of Alabama would be quicker to tend to its own armies or protection at the expense of sending troops to the aid of the main units. This caused a lack of manpower in cases as well as supplies. It also created a bitterness in the political arena as far as which states were getting more attention from the Northern Army.

Each state which comprised the Confederacy felt that State's Rights were a key issue because they felt government in Washington were beginning to rule like that of a monarchy.
