the best way for advertising is word of mouth.. it is also the hardest way, i would suggest trying to get a famous radio station to come out and introduce your company or news madia they like to do that, but make sure not just talking about your buisness have some sort of promotion or added insentive to come to your place that will create a buzz and you will start to get some buisness.

Try specialty nights. Try hosting different civic organizations. While it will cost it will open yourself up to a higher clientele.
Try sponsoring a sports club, get your name on some kind of sponsorship like a race car, or local competitions. Try distributing fliers at malls and other places. If you are a lunch type place, try a blue plate special. A processed meat, potatoes, and two veggies for $5.00, add a dollar for the salad bar.
Or something like this will bring them in, Oh never ever run out of the blue plate at lunch time, that is the only reason they are entertaining the idea of coming to your place to begin with.

Make sure that your customers can find you, by having an attractive sign out front or at the nearest street. One restaurant I know of is invisible because it is not on the street, instead it is deep inside a bunch of business buildings.
Also try selling some other items than just food.
Make sure you are pleasant and friendly and quick to serve all of your customers. Some owners treat some of their customers poorly, be sure you treat yours well, so they can say good things and bring their friends.

First you need to understand why you are not making money now
lack of customers, not enough margings? or both
Both these have to be addressed separately.
If its lack of customers, then why? Poor location, not enough publicity, do you have returning customers? (else the problem might be food) keep drillling down till you find the rigght answers and then think of what the solution should be.
Now question of margins , what proce do you sell food at compare to competitors, can it be raised without losing customers, can it be lowered, can you lower the cost at which you buy, can you lower cost ofmaking?? figure out these and address them.
hope this helps. if you need help with analysing or putting solutions, mail me.

the best advertising is word of mouth. you have to build a reputation with folks so that they will pass along the buzz of the restaurant.
