If you have the same problem when you try different CD's with autoruns, then you have probably a problem with:
- infected OS (scan with an antiviral and antispyware tool)
- low virtual memory (be sure you have more than 500MB recommended free space on the partition where your OS is installed, e.g. C:)
- damaged drive (replace your drive)
- and so on

There are much more possible reasons if you use Windows 98

You can pretty much rule out a virus. Most end users are fixated on viruses as being the cause of all computer problems.

1. If you have only a CD-ROM, make sure the install disk is not a DVD.

2. Look at the disk and make sure it's not too scratched up.

3. Try different disks to rule out a drive problem. If the problem persists install a new

4. You can try removing the drive from Device Manager and rebooting to allow Windows to redetect the drive. But this may only works if there is a conflict due to something you recently installed.

It could be any one of several things:
1. The installation program on the CD could be poorly written or have a virus. Is it a CD from a known company?
2. If the PC is running an old OS like Win95, then you need to upgrade the OS.
3. This is unlikely, but anyway, check that the CD is in the drive correctly.

Try another install CD in the drive. If it works then the problem is with the CDrom itself, not with your computer and not with the drive.

Good luck!

Hi

Ok , first it could be that the cdrom is either damage or the xp is actually having problems with the drive. Now it can also be that cd it self is damage. Now try wit different cds BEFORE even chaging the drive

Reinstall your optical drive drivers, make sure there are no conflicts also. Check event viewer in computer management for any errors. I have heard of automatic updates screwing up peoples machines like this lately. It will report in event viewer /device/cdrom0 has a bad block. There are fixes out for that if that is the case you just have to do some research..
