Hello everyone,

I had to go to a formal meeting last week. I really seldom went to any of the formal meetings, so I didn't know their rules. I've got a nice black suit with me but I couldn't find a pair of black socks-they were not long enough. My wife told me that it's rude for other people to see you legs when you sit down. I didn't want to buy a pack just for one day, so my wife gave me one pair of hers. It was a pair of long, sick stockings and they were black. I thought they should be long enough.

But at the meeting(there was no tables), the girl sit facing me kept looking at my legs! I felt so embarresed. After that, my boss told me a person from the other company told him that his employee is mis-dressed for such a meeting. And he also told me that he saw what I was wearing on my feet, it was sick socks, he told me.

What's wrong with that? I don't know? They were long enough, black and I didn't show my bare legs? Is that rude? I don't get it!

Yes it is. I am a receptionist in a law office after school, and if I came to work even in a pants suit with men's socks on I would be asked to leave. The women here all have to wear sheer hosiery, no patterned tights, or men's style trouser socks. And the men are all required to wear calf high socks and dress shoes.

Women are not allowed to wear open sandals just as men are required to wear jackets and ties. It is distracting to see otherwise. I have seen some women lawyers come in with heels tailored suits and bare legs, and everyone comments on how unprofessional she looks when they leave.

It is not business like to see someone out of their professional dress code, and makes people wonder about their competence on the whole.

I think that maybe to you it wasn't inappropriate but people have different opinions and maybe they thought that you were misdressed it's all about the opinion of those in-charge at those formal meeting, hey, look on the bright side, you now know that you can't wear your wife's socks or pantihoes so just go out and buy yourself a couple pairs of black dress socks, they aren't expensive,DRESS TO IMPRESS so the next time you walk into that room showing how confident you are they konw that you mean business and are there for the professionalizim, personally i don't think it was that bad, but all those high power people have high standards(I think it comes with the job and its postition)

Yes! You should have been wearing men's ribbed over the knee men's dress socks. Wearing women's clothing is as inappropriate as when women come to work in pants suits wearing their husbands or son's socks as some of them do.

Men should wear dress socks and dress shoes, just as women should wear pantyhose or stockings under their office clothes. Neither sex, should wear open sandals or bare feet and legs to the office, it is distracting to look at someones bare feet or legs when at a meeting.

Crossdressing is always not acceptable in business, for men or women. Some women wear trouser socks to meetings with pants suits, and that is as unforgivable as you wearing women's stockings.

Appropriate dress is essential in business, and bare legs on men or women is unacceptable also. Proper attire is knee length dress socks and dress shoes for men, and stockings or pantyhose for women, with a proper heel. Pumps are always more appropriate than sandals. No one wants to be looking at someones feet, no matter how well groomed at a meeting. It is just inappropriate no matter what you are wearing with them, pants or skirt.

It must have been very obvious that you were wearing womens socks, which might have distracted everyone else in the metting. I don't think that it would kill you to get a couple pairs of dress socks, every man should own at least one pair.

Next time, get real socks.

Rude or not, it obviously caught your bosses attention enough that he said something to you about it.
