dad and mom are both are in their late 60s. and retired.

they're poor, elderly and don't own a home. the only asset they have is 30K savings in a bank, which they will probably run out of in a few years. they collect social security which barely pays for their food and some of their bills.

i'm afraid that i won't be able to take care of them when they get older or i will become destitute myself trying to help them.

are there any government programs out there they can qualify for. i've heard of medicaid, ssi and welfare but i don't know what i they would qualify for or how they should go about asking for help ?

does anyone have any life experience in this area and could give me some pointers?

thank you

Stop trying to push your problems on "the government" (i.e. my tax dollars). Take care of your own parents. They can make it on Socialist Security and tax benifits alone in many parts of America. Yes, you won't be able to live in New York City or Los Angeles on SS. Try cheaper rural areas.

They should already be on medicare/caid already but if not they need to get signed up for it. I would try welfare, they'd get foodstamps and energy assistance. You go to your local state agency, it's in the phone book and they will have to go in and sign the tons of papers. You'll need proof income from like a yr back along with income tax from the year before. A print out of their last yrs electric/water and heating bills. The utilities will give you a print out. Bank statements, their assets and medical bills. Birth certificates, social security numbers, they'll give you a list. Good-luck to you.

In the meantime G.Bush is expending 400 billions in a stupid war. You are right, is a shame that the richest country in the world can´t provide decent public health and benefits to US people who has pay taxes for a life. Is disgusting how a group of people is robbing the USA, taking companies out to get cheap labor, etc etc. Take care in the next elections, republicans only care for their own benefit, don´t be influence with terror before you vote, watch out.

Your sitsuation is what millions of elderly are going through. We can support 14 million Mexs who are here againest our laws, but we can't have any passion for those who have worked all thier lives and need our help. My parents went through the same thing and Dad fought the Gov for over 6 years to get his black lung benefits. He died one year later. Thats what the Gov wants. I wish you luck.

If they can't live off of Social Security, then they must have really messed their lives up. If they truely love you they won't drag you down with them. Think of them as a warning for you future.
