Two equation > 1. x + y = 24 and 2. x - y = 6
The "x" and "y-variable" represents unknown values/numbers.
Solve for "x" or "y" in either equation; let's solve for "x" in the 1st equation...
First: subtract "y" from both sides...
x + y - y = 24 - y
x = 24 - y
Sec: replace "24 - y" with the x-variable in the 2nd equation...
24 - y - y = 6
24 - 2y = 6
*Subtract "24" from both sides...
24 - 24 - 2y = 6 - 24
- 2y = - 18
*Isolate "y" on one side > divide both terms by "-2"...
-2y/-2 = - 18/-2
y = 9
Third: replace "9" with the y-variable in the 1st equation...
x + 9 = 24
*Subtract "9" from both sides...
x + 9 - 9 = 24 - 9
x = 15
Solution: (15, 9)

a+b=24 -> a=24-b
a-b=6 -> a=6+b
24-b=6+b
18=2b
9=b
The lesser integer is 9 (the larger would be 9+6=15)

x + y = 24
x = 24-y
x - y = 6
24 - y - y = 6
24 - 2y = 6
24 - 6 = 18 = 2y
y = 9
x = 15.
So the lesser of the two is 9.

Let x = one integer
let y = another integer
x + y = 24
x - y = 6
If you add both columns you get:
2x = 30, then all you have to do is solve for x and find y.
