Suppose: tomorrow a researcher working for a small independent firm came up with a new power source-- something surprisingly small and clean and efficient, that could deliver enough power for every appliance from the size of an automobile down. Suppose as well the components were easy to manufacture, and the root power supply was enormous.

The question: do you believe that we would have the good sense to stop all our profit taking and capital hyping and do what it took to adapt to this new technology? Or would the oil guys, and the nuke guys, (and the money guys that cling to them like flies), do everything in their power to keep the invention from seeing the light of day, since it would a) initially cost them to convert the infrastructure, and b) cost them in the long run since they won't be able to charge as much for supplying energy to the world.

What I'm asking is: are we smart enough to change?

Make your case.

There is a bill in Congress (US) taking away the subsidies that oil companies are getting for oil exploration. It is probably going to pass. The money will be given to alternative energy sources. Hopefully this indicates we're already changing.
