Is i possible to convert an IDE CD-ROM Drive to an external USB drive without an adapter card? I dont want to purchase an external enclosure because it will only be used for an old $5 CD-ROM drive.

I was hoping it would be a simple matter of converting the IDE bus to USB. I guess i'll just toss the drive. Thx for the info.

Well ... not only will you need to convert the IDE to USB, but you will also need to give it power via its 12V power connector.

Possible = sure.
Practical = no way.
