Why is he likeable, sympathetic, and romantic?

I've always been very fond of this poem.

I think he's an appealing figure for a variety of reasons. The forbidden love; the "Robin Hood" like element of the romantic bandit; and in part he generates sympathy via the innkeeper's daughter -- we're touched by her sacrifice and then his gallant effort to avenge her. There is a great deal of a Romeo and Juliet aspect to this poem I've felt.
