What happened here?, I went from using semi-blend 5w-30 in my 4 cyl. to Castrol and the mileage hit the pits! Is this common?

Admittedly it is colder the past 3 weeks but I have been getting 285-300 miles per 10gal forever. Today I got 249 on 10 gal

The motor was pushing a small amount of oil through the valve cover gasket. Not enough to spot the driveway but just enough to be a nucisence

Yes. There is an additive package that stops leaks. You can bet it's stopping other things also like the oil flow through the oiling system. Additional drag on the mains and rods. The pistons, valve train, lifters, push rods, rocker arms all drag also causing excessive heat. Drag creates heat, the slower the motor oil returns to the pan the less engine heat comes down with it. Was your old brand of oil dropping continually? Maybe a quart a 1000 miles? If so jump to a 10W-30 full synthetic. If you look closely at the cold pouring ability on all synthetics you will see that compared to regular oil the synthetic pours at a lower temp. than a comparable weight non synthetic. Plus, the flash point is higher. I won't knock Castrol Oil but there are better brands all around you.

Don't be a bozo to believe any sort of oil changes gas mileage, for better or worse. Your gas mileage took a dive the same time everyone else's did.....when it it turned colder. Here in Canada a car in the summer that gets 35 mpg will get 25 mpg in the winter, or even worse if all you are doing is short trips around town. My Toyota Solara would drop from 28 mpg to 15 in the winter. Nothing to do with oil, unless there is no oil.

I dont think your oil change has anything to do with the mileage dropping. The weather could affect it, or you might try over a averaging over a few tanks rather than just one tank of fuel.

that is a major change in your engine. you changed your motor oil your engine must adjust to the new conditions. Wait a few months and many tanks of gas before worrying about it.
