Yes currently i have a 2.99 p4 processor , and i want to upgrade my computer because i have had it for a while and vista is coming out soon. So my main question is how come all the Duo speeds are like 1.8-2.66ghz and for 2.66 is $400 more. Why would they be slower then a regular core processor. Fill me in because i have no idea and do not want to make a bad choice. Thanks for answers

because the frequency isn't everything-The l2 cache and other factors affect the computer. And the reason that the cores are slower than a single-core proccessor is that there are two cores, so that means the two cores can be clocked at lower speeds.

Duo core is for socket M motherboards. So you probably cannot use it. As for the Core Duo 2, it requires a 775 socket board that supports it. And for Vista, I would strongly suggest NOT getting it. It is slower, requires alot of resources, and runs games SLOWER. Just because it's new, doesn't mean it's better.
www.tomshardware.com for cpu benchmarks. And if you happen to be a 3d gamer, it's the video card that will be the most important part of the computer.
And you can goto tom's hardware for the vista reviews.

Older intel processors had higher CPU clocks because they did less work per clock cycle. Compare this to AMD, which had very low clock speeds yet still managed to be faster.

Intel abandoned its disastrous P4 design and went back to an older but more efficient one. As a result the clock speeds went down, but the CPU now does more work and is thus faster in real world terms.

The Core Duo and Core 2 Duo processors have been redesigned to do more work per CPU cycle so the processor speed does not have to be high.

It's about time. They should have done this in the first place.
