The previous answer to me described the Alltel Pay-Per-Day plan to a tee. However, what you've described tells me you are on the Alltel Pay-Per-Minute plan, not the Pay-Per-Day plan. The following applies to the Pay-Per-Minute plan:

Yes you can text message. It uses up 5 cents of your balance per text message for both incoming or outgoing. You don't need to call any number to do it, you just use the text messaging option in your phone's menus. Nationwide Long Distance is free/included in your plan so it just uses up minutes as normal, i.e. 15 cents per minute.

From what I read on AllTel website, prepaid plan have a 75 cents a daily charge plus any incoming calls/outgoing calls are charged 10 cents a minute. But for another 50 cents per day you have the option of 2 of the following choices to select with your plan.

Unlimited NIghts and Weekends
Unlimited Favorite Number Calling (pick one phone number)
Unlimited Text Messaging
Unlimited Mobile to Mobile

If you do not select the unlimited text messaging, you will be charged 5 cents for every message receive or sent. There are no long distance charges.
