I cut a chunk of my thumb out (literally) while trying to open a package w/sissors about 10-15 min. ago. It was dripping w/blood, it's slowed down alittle. But shouldn't it have stopped by now?

Not necessarily but it may be a good idea to go to the ER and get it checked out to make sure that you don't need stitches or something.

You do not have any major veins there. Even if you cut half your thumb off, you need to hold pressure on the chunk with a CLEAN cloth. I used a towel Now, you can not be moving or using your hand now. It will take about an hour but get some ice on it too. I know I cut a chunk of my thumb with a chain saw. Nasty. There was blood all over the place. But in hour two, I just got it sewed up, and after words, like now I have a slight numbness around the area.

It takes time to slow down. So sit, bear the pain, and watch TV. And must not hurt too much if you are typing this. lol

You have not applied enough pressure to the wond for a long enough time. You may also have to consider that you might have to make a trip to your local ER for stitches. THey don't usually stitch finger tip wounds unless it is of a specific type of severity, but it may require a specific type of packed bandaging. If it is just a chunk taken off, thats probably what you need rather than stitches, but you must also consider when your last tetanus shot was. In the meantime, with as sterile bandaging as you currently have available, place prolonged pressure on the wound. If it continues this way for much longer, go to the ER and they can fix you up by tommorrow maybe (ER Joke, LOL)

The best thing to do to try and stop the bleeding is apply ice with a cloth and apply pressure to the thumb. Make sure that you hold your thumb upwards (like giving a thumbs up) that way the blood does not drain toward the cut.

If it's serious and does not stop bleeding, you'll need to get it checked out.

Put cold water on it and wrap it tightly with a washcloth or something 'til the bleeding stops for good. Make sure you don't need stitches. You might want to go to an ER to see about that.

Some years now my then 10 yr. old son cut himself with a Swiss Army knife. He was too scared to have stitches and his finger healed but looks abnormal (just the tip).
