Since you mention that you enjoy history, I would recommend trying one of Steven Ambrose's books. I've read several and each was very entertaining and well written. Just to name a few, his historical books include: Band of Brothers (about a group of paratroopers during WW2), Nothing Like It In The World (about the building of the Transcontinental Railroad), and Undaunted Courage (about the Lewis and Clark expedition and the opening of the American West).
My personal favorite of his books is Band of Brothers. I recommend it highly. It's written in a way that captures your imagination and makes you care a great deal about the men the story is about.

'The Proud B*st*ards' by E. Michael Helms is a good non-fiction book. It is "One Marine's Journey from Parris Island through the Hell of Vietnam." If you have seen the movie 'Full Metal Jacket' or are interested in war in Vietnam - you'll also enjoy this book.
