Using the same motor, how can we convert a lateral motion into a vertical motion?

Try gearing the motor to a worm gear for the lateral motion (linear actuator) and adding a second worm gear to the first to translate the lateral motion to a vertical direction.

It depends on how much vertical motion. One way is to attach a cam to the drive shaft and what you want for vertical motion to the top of that cam.
