Probably some misguided belief that Jack survived or beat the laws of nature and existed in the afterlife, throwing it in to show her love or honor his memory doesn't make sense. Number one, he would've wanted her to benefit, at least her progeny, number two, hes long gone and doesn't exist, so it doesn't matter what he thinks. In any event, it was all about Jack....boooo!

I was told, and this is just a theory, that Rose didn't actually throw the diamond into the ocean that it was just a dream before she died, "an old lady, warm in her bed." This theory actually makes sense due to the fact with all the struggling and moving around and what not that was happening in the ocean, there is no way that diamond stayed in her pocket through all that.
My twist on it, if in fact she did throw the diamond in the ocean, there is the line in the movie where she says, "A woman's heart is like a deep ocean, filled with secrets." Throwing the diamond in could of really been her way of keeping her love and her heart close to Jack (which I'm assuming his corpse was somewhere at the bottom of the ocean). Also, it could of been her way of making sure that diamond never got into the "wrong hands" and her memories were kept alive in some way.

Maybe she threw it into the ocean since it was "the heart of the Ocean" she felt that the "heart" of the ocean should be within the ocean, she cannot do like the ocean which took her heart(jack) with the Titanic.Hence she felt to return it to the ocean and also she was returning to jack (death of the old lady ) this is what i think.

omg i just watched that movie....well I guess she just didn't want to deal with the publicity and the stress of having the million dollar diamond....maybe she just thought that the diamond belonged in the ocean with the titanic b/c it was called the heart of the ocean anyway

I agree that it was to rid her of past memories. However, more so it was what caused the problem between her and her love because he had been accused of stealing it. If he had not been locked up during that time, they may have had a chance to get on one of the boats and maybe he would have survived. That is just my thoughts.

first of all the heart of the ocean isn't real and second of all in the movie she probably felt the necklace should be with jack and that is why she threw it in the ocean.

I don t know but i thought it was pretty damn selfish after making everyone listen to that long *** story when she knew what they wanted and she knew she had it. I love the movie but i d be pissed if i was a crew member.

I suppose it was some kind of tribute to the long-dead boyfriend. Not very practical though. She could have sent her grandkids to college with that thing.

Are you confusing something from a movie with true events? This is not a historical question, it is a question for Entertainment - Movies.

She threw the diamond in because of all the lives lost, it needed to be with those lives! It gave her closure!
