My Betta developed a small whitish sore on his head. It almost looks like a tiny canker sore. It's more of a crater than a bump. He has one near his tail, and his gills are sort of whitish.
He is not sluggish, has not lost his appetite, seems totally normal. What could this be? I don't think it's Ich because the spots aren't all over and don't look like salt granules. I'm trying to determine the best way to treat him and don't know how to even begin! Thanks for any help. :)

Well, to me, based on the "crater" in the head and the one on his tail, along with the milky appearance around his gills, it sounds like Hole-In-The-Head Disease. It also sounds like you've caught it early because the sore on his head sounds small and because he isn't sluggish and is still eating. Catching a disease early is the best way of saving the fish. The cause is unclear and still up for debate, but it's more and more turning toward poor water quality, poor lighting, nutritional deficiencies or lack of oxygen. You can work on correcting these things after you get treatment going for your fish. You need to treat this with medicated food and a .3% salt solution, which is a scant 1 tsp of salt per 1 gallon of water. Don't overdo the salt because that can kill. You should also feed highly nutritious foods such as krill, bloodworm or brine shrimp. It can take a long time to treat a fish for a disease, so a lot of patience and dedication is required. Good luck!

Columnaris would be my first guess as well, although a fungus usually follows close behind a columnaris infection. There are several other infections that can cause the same type of problem but the treatment is the same. Treat with a good wide spectrum antibotic as columnaris is gram negative. Furanace is the best choice as it will treat both the surface of the fish as well as systemically, while very few other antiboitics will do this. Use 1.5 mg per liter of water.
Best of luck!

sounds like hole in the head or some other parasite. i think you usually treat them the same way you do ich. ask at a fish store where there are middle aged guys working there -- they know fish. don't ask at petsmart or petco.

Please don't get anything at Walmart. Walmart has one of the worst records of all the chain stores that carry fish. There are continual reports of walmart stores improperly caring for their fish.

Find a good local pet store and support them by shopping there.

Well, Ick doesn't start out with many white spots, so it could be ick. I would ask your local pet store. If you live close enough to transport him safely to the pet store, then I would take him in and have them look at it.
