that we have. But what exactly causes eyes to be brown or green or blue or other colors. What physically causes colors. I have a son that was born with blue eyes when he was a newborn. But now they are brown. He wants to know why.

Almost all white/Caucasian babies are born with blue eyes, inside the womb it's dark so the body has not fully begun to produce the pigments (melanin mainly, which causes the eye colour) needed to protect it from the sun.
If you had no melanin in the skin you'd always be burnt so as the body begins to produce it (right from word go) the eyes slowly begin to darken (if they're going to) and by a few months-years the pigmentation has usually settled.

Ahh... good question, with a relatively simply answer (and don't you love when that happens? hehe). :)

Well, simply - some eye colors require light for them to develop into their final color. Since the womb is a very dark place, the eyes will transition over several months/years once they are born.

That's why so many babies are born with blue eyes! Cool, eh?

In humans, variations in color are attributed to varying ratios of the two types of melanin produced by melanocytes in the iris: eumelanin and pheomelanin. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eye_color
As in melanin in our skin, this isn't fully developed until the baby has been brought into the light (like we tan when in the sun). The basic blue hue is formed because babies in uteruo do see light somewhat, but it's very very dim.. the full color doesn't develope until after birth. Does this make sence? Sort of hard to explain hehe.

It is based on the amount of pigment produces (blue eyes being the least amount of pigment). I suspect that babies are born not making the full amount of pigment until they get older at which time their permanent eye color is seen.

Blue eyes are blue because they have less pigmentation. Sometimes babies eyes change colors when they gain pigment.
