The moon race was a political competition between the US and Russia. The first nation to land on the moon would win that particular competition. In addition, the thought was that the first nation on the moon would "control" near-earth space and have a military advantage.
This particular "race" began in the 1950's when the Russians put a dog and then the first man into earth orbit (Yuri Gagarin). The US hadn't done it yet, and had to show the commies that the US was better.
Check history on the "cold war", John F Kennedy, and Lyndon Johnson if you want to know more.

It was so cool! I mean we had never gone to space before, and even the first orbital flights were so cool. Of course it was all political, showing the communist Soviets that good old American freedom could do anything they could do, only better. And it was jaw droppingly fantastic to see the live TV from the Moon. I recall the night that my uncle and his family came to our house and we all watched Armstrong and Aldrin walk on the Moon like it was yesterday. People who did not live through it have no idea at all. It was BIG news. ALL the TV stations (all 7 of them that we got in Los Angeles) carried all the launches and landings live. Hours and hours of live programming replacing regular programming, for every mission. Nothing like the shuttle at all. I mean coverage on every channel starting hours before launch. We got time out of class at school to see live coverage, although most launches were in the very early morning. We used to get up at 4:00AM to watch a launch that was scheduled for 5:00 AM, and ended up in front of the TV for hours as the launch was often delayed. It was just everywhere. Everybody talking about it all the time. Everybody knew the names of all the astronauts. It was BIG BIG BIG. It makes today's super bowl hype look like nothing. But not everyone was as enthusiastic as I was. After Apollo 11, the coverage got less and less. By Apollo 17, the coverage was not what it used to be. People were already getting bored. Been there done that was the attitude. Why should we spend all this money just so some guys can pick up rocks on the Moon. So it was all cancelled. The shuttle was built with the promise of flying every week at a much lower cost than the Saturn rockets because it was reusable. And I hoped that it would lead to better and better space craft. But it didn't work as well as expected. The shuttle cost just as much to fly as the old rockets and it didn't fly any more often. Now, people REALLY don't care. What a shame!
