It's their way of justifying their relative stupidity (as well as their relatives' stupidities).

I've noticed that the attitude about being smart and being a nerd seems to be turning around a bit. I think people are starting to realize that in this world brains will often beat brawn. While you may still be called a nerd, there seems to be a little bit of respect from the people calling you that name.

If your smart your not a nerd. Some people are nerds already and may act like nerds. Most smart people aren't nerds.

You're only considered a nerd if you act like one. Like if you go around only talking about school and work and video games all the time and dressing like a nerd will make you one.
If you're smart and don't brag about it all the time and not raise you're hand everytime a teacher asks a question than you won't be classified as one.

Stupid people rule. They want to look out for their franchise.
But seriously, people who know the way are targeted. Not just smart people but good people too. Society attacks all members who are on the margins, or outside edges. Even people who are leading society in the right direction because they too are on the margin until everyone gets there.
Use your internal compass and do what is right. Don't wage battles whose outcome has no value. Pick your battles and you will be OK. And the last thing, look out for those people who are attacking you. If you prove your heart they may leave you alone.

Because they wish they were smart and need a way to compensate for their own envy. I notice that the only people that will put a bad connotation with something good is when they are secretly jealous.
In high school, there was an undebatably good singer, and she got most of the solos in choir. My friend tried to say she didn't like her voice because it was too operatic. In reality, my friend had a very similar voice to hers, and she probably just said that because she saw her as competition.

I am 6ft.8"320.lbs.16eee feet, and a real man.never play.quit school because they wanted me to go out and play.ha ha. I have always read a lot, over 3500 books .university,IQ about 170. and people wouldn't DARE call me a nerd.I believe you have to look like and act like a nerd to be called one .within my experience anyway.you have to train people in the way you wish them to treat you.they don't know unless you tell them.so don't take anything off people, stand up for yourself, and always have faith

I agree with the other poster, they are probably jealous. People usually put other people down because they are insecure themselves. I personally think it's great to be smart and apply yourself!!
