The 1939 nickel is not scarce and has value only in very high grade and mint state. It had a mintage of 120,627,535. Your $5 bill is a silver certificate and sells for $8.00 in grade fine and $15.00 in grade extra fine. It is not rare at this time either.

A 1939 Jefferson 5 cents is valued at:
- average circulated: $0.25 to $0.50
- almost uncirculated with details: $1.50

Nickel that has a small D on reverse valued from $10 to $20 from average circulated specimens onward, and with a small S from $2 to $10.
