I have a pair of discus in my 6 foot tank. They have layed several lots of eggs, they then gaurd them closely for about two days before eating them. They are the only fish in the tank.
Has anyone else experienced this with Discus or better still Does anyone know why they do it or how to stop it?

This is not as rare as you might think. Discus and many other types of cichlids do this. A very famous Discus breeder, Jack Wattley touches on it in his book.

There are two main reasons they might do it. One is they are young and inexperienced and get nervous. They could also get nervous from other fish in the tank, but that's not the problem for you. People in the room can also make them nervous or any other activity in the room. screening off that end of the tank might help if this is the case.

The other main reason would be that the eggs are not viable. This could be because one or the other fish is sterile. I had this problem with a pair of severums several years ago. If this is the case there is nothing you can do except pair them with other fish and try to find out which is sterile. If you can get a close look at the eggs 1-2 days after they are laid you can look for fungus or milky white eggs. That would indicate he eggs are bad.

Give them a little time, plenty of addition cover and see if that doesn't help.

Best of luck!

there is not any go with at upload Methylene Blue even as the father and mom are elevating the eggs. they save them sparkling and fungus free. you should only go with to operate this in case you've been hatching the eggs your self and under no circumstances parent elevating them. They in all likelihood ate them because you further a chemical which became no longer needed and it less than pressure them out.

Magicman 1 is right on with his advise. Also keep the traffic down around their tank and this might help.
