We went on the maternity tour today at the hospital where I'll deliver. The retired nurse who gave the tour explained that photos are not allowed during the delivery, but everything up to and following. She said this is federal law. Has anyone heard of this? I want to make sure this isn't just my hospital or everyehere. Thank you!

As far as I know it is NOT a "federal law" but it might be hospital policy. I would ask your DOCTOR what he is comfortable with.

My doulas took pictures during the actual birth of my first (only hospital birth) and my third (homebirth). We would have had pix during the birth of our second (freestanding birth center), but it was too fast for anyone else to get there to take them.

It's not the hospital's discression it is the doctor's. If the doctor is okay with it then it will be fine but it his/her decision. My sister's doctor told me I could film the the whole time, but I could not film him delivering the baby or him period I could only tape my sister. The doctor's do this for legal reasons in case something would go wrong. The hospital has nothing to do with it, the doctor can do whatever they want to when it comes to their patient. As far as a baby story I can guarantee you that the patient, and the television show had to sign tons of paperwork stating that the doctor would not held be liable for anything that could go wrong.

I have never heard of it being a federal law. I know when my SIL had her C-section last year my brother wasn't allowed to take any pictures, still or video, and I'm sure it is because they don't want to be sued if anything goes wrong. Then all the proof would be on video tape! But if it's a federal law, that's news to me.

Yes, it is true. The hospital will not allow photos or videotaping during delivery; this prevents pictures and videotape from being used in a malpractice law suit against the doctor.

A Baby Story is totally screwed then isn't it! They've televised video taping of live births all over the united states. Your retired nurse is an old fuddy duddy LOL Call the maternity ward and ask them direct. Tell them it's your wish to have someone take photos of the delivery and would they allow it. If she says no it's law... then ask for a copy of the ruling because without it you're going to do it if they like it or not! It's your most private parts, who on earth do they think they are telling you you can't take pics of your on private parts. Just don't take face pics of the nurses or docs. I'm so glad i live in Canada. We certainly aren't sue happy around here. I have a beautiful video tape of the coming of my son and billions of snap happy snap shots to go with it. (Nothing super private)

I had a baby 7 weeks ago in Missouri and we video taped the birth. It must just be hospital policy.

There are videos of the whole delivery process posted on the internet and they have them on tv all the time so I'm guessing that the nurse was full of baloney.

When I had my youngest by C-section 6 years ago the nurses actually took the camera for us to get pics of her being born and what not.
