...is a good place to live where I will not get sucked up by a hurricane? I want to be an hour away from the beach if that is do-able.

Every part of Florida is susceptible to hurricanes. I lived in Jacksonville for a little while, and folks there used to say that it was actually fairly safe from hurricanes because the coast curves in there (Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia), so for a hurricane to hit Jacksonville directly it would have to come due west off the ocean, which is pretty rare (usually they hit at an angle).

However, while I was there Hurricane Floyd gave us quite a scare (but it turned north at the last minute and hit South Carolina instead). Schools were canceled, businesses closed, and lots of people tried to evacuate. I say tried, because I-10 West became a parking lot - many people gave up and rode out the storm (we did get the edge of it) in places like WalMart's parking lot. Perhaps they have a better evacuation plan for the city by now, this was about 8 years ago.

I have lived in Tampa area for 30 years and we have never been hit with the full force of a hurricane... not to say it wont happen....

I would stay to west coast of Florida... from Tampa to the North

Crestview or Niceville is a nice drive from Destin. Both areas are growing and have a lot to offer.
