i think it goes like this...

x+ab=ax+3

ab-3=ax-x

ab-3=x(a-1)

(ab-3)/(a-1)=x

if you ever want math help, go to webmath.com. they solve equations like this and show you the steps for it. in fact, perhaps i should check this problem there right now...

0. Recopy the equation:
|---: x + ab = ax + 3.

1. Put all the x terms on side and everything else on the other:
|---: x - ax = 3 - ab.

2. Group all the x terms into one expression:
|---: x (1-a) = 3 - ab.

3. Divide both sides by whatever is encumbering the x:
|---: x = (3-ab) / (1-a).

x+ab=ax+3

x+ab-ax=ax+3-ax subtract ax from both sides

x-ax+ab-ab=3-ab subtract ab from both sides

x-ax=3-ab

x(1-a)=3-ab factor an x out of the left side

(x(1-a))/(1-a)=(3-ab)/(1-a) divide both sides by (1-a)

x=(3-ab)/(1-a)
