I was just curious if there are any large grocery stores within New York city limits or are there just small corner grocery stores every couple of blocks?

Fairway has a couple of locations, and they are quite large. If that's not big enough, Restaurant Depot (Jetro) has a couple of immense warehouse locations where you can buy food in mass quantities. Still not enough? There's Hunts Point Market, where almost all the food in the metro area comes from, just back up your truck.

There are grocery stores in NYC:

Associated Supermk/409 E. 14th St (212) 254-1509
Associated Supermarket NYC 10019 212-581-7200
Associated Supermarkets, 278 Park Ave S, NYC (212) 982-7326

Food Emporium, 10 Union Sq. 14th/(at E 14th St. Subway entrance)

Expect items to be more pricy than Gristedes Manhattan - look online or call directory assistance for phone numbers of other supermarkets in Manhattan.

Wal-Mart, I don't remember which borough. Go to the Walmart website, the locations in the NYC area should be listed.
I shop at :Associated Supermarket at East 14/1st Ave .

Whole Foods is also on East 14th. /Trader Joes is on East 14th.

D'agostino Supermarkets (look online for locations)

Depends on what you mean by "large". There are larger stores than just corner groceries. D'agostino is one chain. But nothing like a Super Walmart in the city.
