Definitely not too much--the receptionist is the "face" of the company. You need to look as professional as anyone else there.

Not sure where I heard this, but I was once told that you should dress one step above the level of dress of the position you are applying for. So if the pants and sweater is what you would wear if you got the position then you probably should wear the jacket. Or if the office is more casual then the sweater should be OK. I hope this makes sense, and helps.

Always dress above what you feel for an interview. I managed a restaurant for a while and I would not hire someone who applied in jeans...regardless of how low level/casual the position seemed. Making a good first impression is always important and will have a long lasting effect. Trust your friend...she is right. Show up in dress pants and a sweater and you will feel uncomfortable the whole time.

You can never ever be too dressed up for a job interview--wear the jacket with the pants.

well, how professional of a place is it? is it a hair salon or will you be the face of a CEO? Business dress is always appropriate. Yes Yes! wear a nice blouse with a black suit jacket and black pants.
Is its a hair salon, I'd wear something soft and pretty, but nothing sexy.

As long as you are not wearing something casual, either one would probably work. To deside which is best, you might want to look and see what the people at the company are wearing. But I would personally say the sweater.

I would always dress higher than the job your going for. So a jacket would be best.. never looks like trying too hard!

In my personal opinion, yes, the jacket would be too much. Rather than the jacket, fancy the outfit up with a strand of pearls. Good luck!
