I doubt you have ever played soccer if you could even think defender can't cross half field! Yeah, also a defender cannot touch the ball with his hands (even when doing a throw-in)!

In soccer there aren't any restrictions on what players can go where and do what, other than the fact that the goalkeeper can use his hands inside the 18-yard-box.
"Defender" is a vague word in regards to a soccer position as there are typically multiple defending positions, such as right halfback, left halfback, stopper, sweeper, etc., and each has its own responsibilities.
Furthermore, the formation of the team in question changes the responsibilities of its players: some teams will drop a single defender deep, while others will play its defense flat. Some teams will specifically mark players man-to-man, other teams mark on a zone basis.

To answer your question, as a defender, you want to:
A. Be coordinated and organized with your fellow defenders, so you're not all just swarming the guy with the ball.
B. Mark and track your man, if you have one.
C. Provide support to your offensive players (by this I mean being an option for them to pass back to you).

defenders usually stay one the big box of the goalie box. and like the name you defend the goal. you are the second line of defense. u usually stay around that area or where the midfielders are. u can go past the half line a little but if it gets past you, you have to run back to help protect the goal. an advantage would be having the opposing team's forwards get offsides.

it really depends were your at in defense defenders are evolving it used to be defend defend defend but it has become almost required for defenders especially outside defenders to push up and play a wing type position delivering crosses in for the strikers to get the glory

There are no restrictions according to your position :) you just have to follow your coach's instructions (tactics, etc) but you can score...!just don't hit ball with hands :) !
