When you turn the knob to the left, it initiates cold water and to the right is hot. Basically it's backwards and seems that the original plumber or installer connected hot to cold and visa versa. The catch here is that it is a "stand up" shower, so I cannot access the wall behind the water mixer w/o removing the entire shower unit (basin?). If it's possible to correct this, I would prefer to, as guests are constantly fighting the mixer. Thanks!

If it is a Moen all you need to do is turn the cartridge 180 degrees. Some other brands are also switchable. If that isn't the case you will need to access the valve from one side of the wall or the other and replumb it. If you are not a plumber you might want to call one.

Call the manufacturer of the valve. By answering a couple questions, they can tell you the easiest method for your shower. The manufacturer name is typically on the escutcheon (trim). I suggest this because it may not be as simple as just flipping the cartridge.
For example, Delta (Monitor) has two types of cartridges in their single handled valves that each has a different remedy, or has a ball assembly that could be switched. By your description, if you have a Delta, you have a ball. If you have a knob handle, you're in luck and fixed for less than $15. 1800.345.DELTA.

All the above answers are right. Most valve manufacturers now days realize that valves sometimes get installed upside down at the mistake of the installer. Unfortunately cant say that in my first few years, out of haste, I have never done it myself. Remove the trim on the valve. Shut off the water to your house, or valve if it has integral stops. Remove the cartridge and flip it 180 degrees. reinstall it and your trim and it should work normally. Its very easy!

Turn off the water supply, remove the handle and then the valve.
Then pull the mixer out and flip it over.
Reinstall valve and handle.

try turning the valve upside down if it is able to.Otherwise find a way to access the pipes going to it before they go behind the shower and reverse them there.

Can you get access to the two pipes at ANY point? You don't have to switch them at the fixture, you can switch them anywere along the line.
