The first thing that springs to mind is the purchase of Alaska. It was purchased in 1867 for the equivalent of 1.7 billion dollars. Here is what wikipedia says:
"The purchase was at the time derided as Seward's folly, Seward's icebox, and Andrew Johnson's polar bear garden, because it was believed foolhardy to spend so much money on the remote region."

Of course, first there was the gold rush and then the finding of oil, not to mention the strategic importance. I think it is clear that buying Alaska was a good deal in the long-term.
