When I was in my pre-teens and early teens I loved the Sweet Valley High and Sweet Valley Twins series by Francine Pascal. It's a series about two twin girls, Jessica and Elizabeth who had very different personalities and the things they got up to. They later came out with a series called Sweet Valley University and I think there may be some others. It's really about two very different twins growing up and life in general (clean romance, high school escapades, friendship, etc.) You can find out more on http://www.randomhouse.com/sweetvalley/#

I would recommend The Magic Tree House Series. They are fiction, but they also present a lot of useful non-fiction information about a variety of topics. There are also 14 research guides that go along with the series of 36 books. The research guides go farther in depth for some of the topics.
