Your local county ( state) license should be able to help you. Call the state police and ask. If no luck, the capital of your state's licensing office should tell you. I think you're asking a wise question that everyone should know. Inspection stations nation wide try to manufacture a parts or an adjustments that are not in the scope of the state inspecting criteria . Generally speaking all your internal and external lights and signals must work. No cracks in the viewing area of the windshield. The horn, brake pads or shoes must be within allowable limits as well as tires. Your emergency brake cable must be adjusted properly. Believe it or not PA. has specific limits on the amount of rust your vehicle may have. Some states are very restrictive as far as exhaust systems are concerned. Starting in 2007 in NY. 1998 and newer cars and trucks will be "tubed" for emissions. If you can't pass you'll pay to have it fixed. The inspection people can not make you buy hoses, belts, windshield cleaning fluid, add engine oil, trans. fluid, rear end lube. Only by your OK. I've never liked to watch them manhandle half shafts or prying on tie rod ends. Hope this has helped. All states have their peculiarities.

Usually it's safety inspection.

Brakes, all lights working, gas emission testing, windows (can't be cracked) front end to make sure nothing is about to fall off.

Should take no more than 35-40 minutes and usually costs between $75-$100 unless something needs to be replaced

It depends on your state. In Mississippi, all they check are things like windshield, horn, blinkers, and horn, but in Georgia, they do more of an emissions test. They basically run your engine and check the exhaust and do some sort of gas cap test.

They go from top to bottom on your car. They start with the windshield, mirrors, body of the car, tires, leaks underneath the car, and finally the emissions test.
