I am in Dallas now but not sure if I want to stay and my only other location I have been thinking of going to is Fort Walton Beach FL in the Emerald Coast area. So what would you choose between these options and why?

OK.... really different areas.... If you like Dallas, you will not like Ft Walton but if you dont like it in Dallas you may like Ft Walton.

Ft Walton is a MUCH smaller atmosphere.... not the same options available as in a large city .... If you like a more laid back kind of lifestyle Ft Walton may work for you... it isnt for everyone but those that like it, Love it.

Is being near the water important? for me it is and that why I love Florida but I needed a large city... so I live in Tampa

Well, the Emerald Coast is absolutely beautiful but I would not want to live in Ft Walton. It seems to be turning into a ghost town. After living in Dallas, you would probably die of boredom. You might want to look farther east like Panama City. It's nothing compared to Dallas either, but better than Ft Walton. I guess if I had to choose between the Big D and Ft Walton....I would stay in Dallas. Good luck!

Are you thinking about retiring?

I lived in Florida for 22 years and now live in Dallas. There is a lot more activity, diversity and things to do in Dallas. In addition, there are more employment opportunities in the Metroplex than there are in Florida. Also, if you have children, the retirees in Florida definitely don't want to pay for the quality of schools available in the Metroplex.

The people are nice in both areas, but Florida is definitely a more "mature" crowd.
