Ignorant in regards to what, specifically?
What a shame that you haven't had the experience of having talented, hard-working, inspiring teachers -- they CAN make a world of difference.
I do have to respond to one of the commenters in regards to the pay/holiday/vacation issue. Have you ever taught?
I ask, since I had the same opinion...before I taught. Yow - if you teach well, you are NOT making adequate pay (even if you teach for a district with a great pay scale).
Granted, there are sadly some teachers who do very little, take the paycheck, enjoy the vacations, and belittle their students in the process. They get the SAME PAY as teachers who work hard. That's one of the many things wrong with the union. I've never signed up for a teacher's union, and I never will.
There is NO merit pay for good teachers. Some districts will give bonuses to teachers whose students perform well on standardized tests. I teach music - that does me no good.
For a teacher to make a decent salary, he has to change professions and become a principal (a completely different job).
Maybe teachers are act so ignorant since they don't want to offend anyone...

I hate to side with Tree seeing as how I'm a teacher myself, but she's right. We DO get a pay increase each year without necessarily earning one. The current system protects teachers who aren't doing their job and hinders those who are. I WOULD like to point out that not all teachers ARE incompetent, and not all of us complain about the pay.
As for the actual question, you're seriously going to need to give more information as to what you mean. At least give us the example that's got you frustrated enough to waste 5 points. If you want to get technical, ignorant just means you don't know. I'd be arrogant (heh heh) if I claimed I knew everything. I'd also be wrong. What's wrong with not knowing everything? I'm sure that's not at all what you mean, but seriously. What sort of ignorance are you dealing with here?

Maybe it is you that is ignorant. Maybe you don't understand. Maybe you're not doing the work that's expected of you. Maybe your teacher doesn't like you? These are all possible answers. Teachers have THE hardest jobs and we ARE under paid. Summers off? That's not enough we spend more time with our students than their parents do. Grading papers, making sure that students can pass exams and stay at or above grade level. We need summers off to recuperate from such a long school year. Plus when you add the amount of planning we do for each class, everyday!! $40,000 and summers off is not that amazing. But we don't teach for the money. we do it for the love of the job for the ability to give back what we have taken.

Because they can.
In so many parts of the country, they're protected by a strong, corrupt union. And, society and the media has convinced everyone they have the hardest job that is so poorly paid. If you get 3 months and all holidays off and start out in some places at $40g a year, how horrible do you have it?
Up until No Child Left Behind, they weren't even held accountable for not doing their job. Do you have a job where you can preform poorly year after year (often using the same materials and script year after year), and expect an increase in pay? Me either.

I don't exactly no what you mean. Sometimes teachers act like they do not know an answer to your question so you can try to figure it out on your own. Its called researching. Your not going to get all the answers as an adult and need to learn how to figure things out on your own. If a teacher always gave you the answer he or she would not be teaching you.

I dont think teachers act ignorant. In fact, they should as they are not as knoweldgeable as they pretend to be.
All of my schooling...public schooling, from high school therough college were teachers trying to indoctrinate me into their line of thinking.
And why are all teachers, except business course teachers, socialists?

So their students won't feel so bad about truly being ignorant.

It has been my experience that many teachers are booksmart and lack common sense. That is why they seem so ignorant.
