In a way, sort of. They aren't actively trying to make Star Trek/Wars/Gate a reality because they think it would be cool, but they are always working on new tools to give them a leg up on the enemy. For example, there is a microwave laser 'active denial' system going into operation. It is a beam that you mount on top of a truck and fire at protesters, undesirables or whatever, that irradiates the top layer of their skin, creating a severe burning sensation. Think about how effective microwaves are at cooking your food, then imagine having one that's more powerful, and that you're in it.
I don't think anyone's researching a 'force field' yet, but I could be wrong.
Sci-fi doesn't always become reality, but often something similar does. Keep in mind, sci-fi writers base their creations on their own vision of the future.

I have been a SciFi fan since the late 1940's and much that was scifi then has truly become reality...energy weapons are an old scifi item and I am only surprised that we have not successfully developed them along ago. This also applies to the idea of energy protective field...principle being that what man can think of he very possibly can create.

No, science fiction is meant to explore ideas about possibilities before we encounter them. For instance space travel, what we might find and what the social consequences might be. It can be predictive, but it can also be very far off if it presumes things that do not actually occur, for instance post apocalyptic nuclear holocaust fiction was very big in the cold war. No nuclear war not predictive value.

No it's just fiction that asks the question what if. That some of the predictions become fact is because their are some writers that start with theories that are close to being proven.

No; but, it asks imaginative questions that get us thinking ... and some of them become real ... we do it, when it's scientifically possible.
My answer to you is yes and no.
Yours truly,
Jonnie
PS Your cell phone was a prediction of Sci-Fi along time ago, just like Dick Tracey's two way watch.
