Springfield is the fictional city in which the TV series The Simpsons is set. It is located near Shelbyville and Capital City in an unnamed state.
Founded in 1796 by Jebediah Springfield, Springfield seems to be a small city rather than a megalopolis. Its features include one nuclear power plant; a vaguely Protestant Church; two elementary schools (Springfield Elementary School and West Springfield Elementary School); Springfield Preparatory School; Springfield University; Springfield A&M; Springfield Heights Institute of Technology; several museums, including a 'Knowledgeum'; a minor league baseball stadium; an airport; an ocean harbor and Squid Port; a waterfront casino; a downtown district; Springfield Gorge; several massive mountains, including the 'Murderhorn'; a dog track (Springfield Downs); a large tire yard (which has been on fire for well over 35 years); a ghetto; a Russian district; its own Little Italy, Greektown, and Little Bangkok District; an entirely Jewish neighborhood; Moe's Tavern, a bar run by Moe Szyslak; many interesting restaurants, including The Texas Cheesecake Depository, The Frying Dutchman, and Professor P. J. Cornucopia’s Fantastic Foodmagorium and Great American Steakery; and Barney's Bowl-A-Rama, a bowling alley run by Barney Gumble's uncle.
Springfield's nearest neighboring town is Shelbyville. There is a strong rivalry between the towns, dating back to the rivalry that existed between their founders—Jebediah Springfield and Shelbyville Manhattan. Manhattan wanted to found a city where men were free to marry their cousins, but Springfield refused to allow it, so Shelbyville broke away with his supporters and founded a rival town. (The story of the dispute between Jebediah Springfield and Shelbyville Manhattan contains faint references to the historical stories of the deal between Asa Lovejoy and William Overton to file a land claim, and the dispute between Lovejoy and Francis Pettygrove over the name of Portland, Oregon—which is Simpsons creator Matt Groening's birthplace).

Hi, Stephen. Well, I watched quite a lot of episodes of the simpsons, and I think I hear ya. Yes, Lisa Simpson has always been unappreciated by her family and friends, and the only person who actually cherish her is Principal Skinner. haha. Well, you should know that Lisa is just a cartoon character and is not real. And I personally think that you're not sad cause of Lisa, you're upset because people seemed to take intelligent people for granted. And its a horrible, horrible fact. It's fine for you to feel that way once in a while, but don't make it a habit. Instead of weeping over her, why don't you go play basketball or something? It's a positive activity and it will release your extra energy ;)

While in reality the town of Springfield exists in almost every state in the union, no one really thinks that the Simpsons Springfield is anywhere inparticular.
However, it is Springfield Illinois

Lisa once says something to the point of not too many people know where Springfield is, but if you pay attention to the clues, you can figure it out. The clues I see tend to CONFUSE me. There is a lemon tree in Springfield.. so it points to either the west coast or the southern one.. They showed that you could see the Arch from Springfield once.. you CAN"T from Springfield IL, but you can for a few miles into IL from Mo. Once they went to Branson Mo, and they said it was 1000 miles away.. again not pointing to the Midwest.

They will never say what state. It is even part of a ongoing joke that the show has made many attempts to rouse suspicion as to what state. If you want to know ask the writer of the Simpson's directly to find out. Peace, love, and joy to you.

Many fans say the episode "Behind the Laughter" definitvely noted that Springfield was in Kentucky, per the narrator. But in repeats of that episode, the narrator said Springfield was in Missouri.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
According to interviews and "The Simpsons" Archive FAQ, Matt Groening chose the name "Springfield" simply because it is one of the most common city names in the United States.
But Groening and the writers have enjoyed teasing fans with clues as to where the town might be located

Yeardly Smith said they gave clues in the first season. At first I thought it was Illinois, but on a recent trip through KY I saw the towns of Simpsonville and Shelbyville. That made me change my mind fast. I'm convinced it's KY.
