Depends on the individual's personality. If you already know this person doesn't listen when upset, then why try. However, if it is crucial to deal with the person, then try to identify what things tend to maintain this person under "cool" conditions. For example, does the person appreciate sports? "So what did you think about the game last night?" This is just an example, start by breaking the ice smoothly; confrontation is only going to bring you more conflict.

Don't- they are irrational and not using their higher intelligence at that point. Best to wait for them to calm down if possible. Try chanting for them and praying for them first. Go to harekrishnatemple.c for the maha mantra (the great mantra for deliverance from all material suffering and illusion) Read Bhagavad Gita as it is By Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada which gives the purpose and meaning of life and how to get out of all misery.

Kick them in the leg. That'll get their mind off of their troubles and give them something more constructive to be upset about.

Did you upset them or did someone else upset them. Do they want their "space" for a little while, or will they accept your help/apology.

acknowledge her/his sadness. tell her that u know it must be a hard time now and though u cannot drive away the pain tell her u will always be around should he/he needs anything. just be a good friend and dont go disappear on her at this time.

depend on his/her character. sometimes people like to be left alone. but most of the time, show that you care.

Try to ask them what's wrong, and see if they will tell me. And if they do try to tell them something uplifting to make them feel better.
