It has to do with strength. Graphite clubs never did anything for me. They are too flimsy. You really need to try out each and see what fits your swing best.

If you have a fast swing, I would avoid graphite shafts--they are more flexible than steel shafts, and you may find yourself hitting "behind" the ball a lot more often (A.k.a--"Slicing" or "pushing")
I have a fast golf swing, so I switched to steel shafts-- took 7 strokes off my game!
