With the car on level ground there is a plug located on the right side of the transmission just above were the right c v axle goes in. The transmission must be up to operating temp. The car running pull the plug if there if fluid present when the plug is removed it is full. If not fill the transmission until fluid runs out. The fill port is a screw cap located between the air filter box and the engine . It is red in color.

There is an 11 or 12 mm plug close to the axle extension housing. You have to pull the plug out and run the car on level ground,as someone already mentioned. To make sure the trans is full, you take the red cap off and add fluid until it runs out of the plug hole. Be sure and reinstall the plug when you are through! It's messy and primitive!
Grand Ams used to have a trans dip stick. Must have been cheaper to make them without it.

I had a 99 but with a 6cyl. On it you can't check the fluid. It was supposed to be good for the life of the car or at least 100k miles.

Another of GM's great ideas, take it in for a fluid flush, new filter and gasket if you haven't done yet.

Just open the cap and stick a coathanger or something in it.

If the casing is dry, then it should be fine.
