No it won't. You can't generate enough voltage with the kickstart to run the ignition in those things. You might get enough by push starting it, but it's never a good idea to run an engine with electronic ignition and no battery to buffer the voltage. That's a heck of a good bike. I had an 80 XS11 for 24 years.

when you disconnect the battery while its running the your breaking the circuit Some bikes need a battery to run, due to the alternator design and also the use of relays and fuel pump. Alot of bikes that have relays will need at least 9 -10volts in order to have enough power to activate the various relays that would 'lock out ' the engine from starting. 9-10 volts is very low, and you would have to bump start with no lights on. Then there is no guarentee it would start. Theyre may also be a need for 12volts to the cdi unit. The only bikes i know that can run without a battery are some offroad bikes and the Honda CG125.. The Honda CG125 uses the generator to power the ignition system and the lighting runs on AC- directl from the generator

Nomadd is right you can't get enough spark to fire that bike by kicking without a battery, and if you do push or pull it and get it running it will play hell with the charging system if you don't have a battery in it..... and charging system parts ain't gonna be cheap!! Whoever gave the thumbs down on his answer better check the books... I had a 750 LTD that ran like crap just because the battery cable was dirty and corroded..

That depends on the bike, really. Some will run without a battery, but others are built in such a way that the magneto can't create enough current, so the bike won't run, no matter what. I have an xs650, and it will not even fire without a battery (pulled at 20 mph).

Some bikes don't have batterys (dirt bikes). Some older bikes will not run unless the battery is fully charged (battery ignition). If the charging system is working properly on your bike (xs850), it will run with a dead battery as long as the engine is reved above idle.

Nomadd knows what he's talking about.Even if you have a battery in it, it will run like crap if the battery is low ..The old bikes had magnetos is why they would run without a battery.

I rode a 1971 Triumph Bonnie for over 25yrs. & the only time it had a charged battery in it was when I took it to be inspected & the bike's lights had to be on while the bike wasn't running. So to answer your question, yes & yes.

Yes, it should. If you can't kick it, try pushing. Just make sure your positive battery cable end isn't touching ground anywhere.
